Chamomile & Calendula Baby Powder

Nappy rash are common among children and they can happen even if you look well after your baby’s bottom. Almost all children who wears nappies will at some stage develop a rash. The main factor that causes rashes are.

Baby Powder

  • Prolonged dampness
  • Friction
  • irritating substance in the baby’s wee & pooh

Usually a good nappy rash cream such as our Sweet Chamomile & Calendula Nappy Rash Cream will get rid of a rash after a few applications.

However, I did came across a nasty rash whilst my baby girl was teething that we couldn’t get rid of. So we had to implement some extra measures to ensure the  rash would go away.

  1. Let baby bottom “air” (even 10 minutes will help)
  2. Change nappies more frequently
  3. Use fabric nappies instead of plastic
  4. Use luke warm water and cotton clothe (soap free) to wash baby bottom. (pat dry)
  5. Keep moisture away at all cost. Use our homemade baby powder (see recipe below)
  6. Alternate with baby powder and our Sweet Chamomile & Calendula Nappy Rash Cream (put a really thick layer) to help repair the skin.

Some rashes won’t go away with these simple measure so consult your doctor for further treatment.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Chamomile Flower
  • 2 Tbsp Calendula flowers
  • 1 Tbsp oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup of bentonite clay
  • 1/2 cup of arrowroot powder
  • 5 drops Chamomile Essential Oil

Direction

  1. Blend Flowers & Oatmeal in food processor until a fine powder
  2. Add Clay & arrowroot powder pulse to combine
  3. Place the mixture in a bowl and add the essential oil and stir to combine
  4. Place in a shaker

**Use a recycled glass jar and make some holes on in the lid with a nail

DIY Chamomile Toner

A toner is made up of mostly water and is applied to the face and neck area. It is used to reduced oiliness and improve the skin condition. A toner is also great for people with sensitive skin because it is a much gentler option than a cleanser.

I formulated this recipe for people with oily skin but this can easily be adapted for other skin type by replacing ingredients to suit.

Lavender & Chamomile Toner

  • 15ml  witch hazel floral water (astringent)
  • 12.5ml lavender floral water (soothing and healing great for oily, dry & mature skin)
  • 5ml water (deminerilised)
  • 5ml Aloe Vera liquid Organic (humectant, moisturizing and healing)
  • 1ml Glycerine (humectant, moisturizing)
  • 1ml Olive Extract ( conditioning and softening and full of antioxidant) Replace by Green Tea Extract for sensitive skin conditions.
  • 0.25ml Chamomille Extract (anti-inflammatory, soothe skin)
  • 0.25ml preservative

Method

  1. Heat the floral water and water to boil
  2. Let cool and add all other ingredients
  3. Store in bottle or spray bottle

*If you can’t find Chamomile extract simply make a chamomile the (1/2 the water for strength) and use the water.

*If you choose to go preservative free. I would recommend to keep the mixture in the fridge for up to 4 days.

How to use it.

  1. At night, use toner on your face, neck, after a cleanser or by itself.
  2. In the morning to remove sebum produced during the night and to balance your skin’s pH.

Natural Anti Aging Oils

As we age, our natural oil production decreases, creating dry skin that, over time, is less resilient to the constant stretching of our muscles, resulting in wrinkles.

Most commercial  anti aging creams contains the smallest amount of good oils (usually at the bottom of the ingredients list) mixed with chemical fragrances and other toxic ingredients. Seen the expiry date on these products? Of course not because they are met to last a HUGE 33 months or more on the shelf. You wouldn’t eat something that old, so why put it on your skin?

Here’s a list of oils we use at Waterroots and what we recommend to fight ageing skin.

Apricot Kernel Oil – is rich in vitamin A & E, Omega 6 & linolenic acid. It has a non greasy fell and the vitamins found in this oil encourage cell regeneration and collagen productions to help reduce wrinkles.

Try it in:

Avocado Oil – is rich in vitamin A & E, and is one of the healthiest carriers oils around. It is extremely rich and can be greasy and thick on the skin. This is why we recommend it for dry skin or has an extra NIGHT nourishment.

Try it in:

Coconut Oil – is full of anti oxidant vitamin E. Coconut oil is known to help reduce cellulite & stretch marks.

Try it in:

Geranium Oil – Helps to lighten age spots and even out overall skin tone.  It also provide circulation under the skin’s surface which aids in cell regeneration, making it useful for fading scars, wrinkles, and other visible imperfections in the skin.

Silk Powder

Ever wonder why we use silk powder in some of Waterroots products?

Silk powder originates from the same source of silk fabric: the silk worm. Silk in its powder form gives a soft texture to body creams and hair products and it also helps balance the skin’s moisture while improving its texture.

Silk powder is of protein source and protein is made of amino acid, meaning that it can assist in rebuilding the skin and or hair structure if added into the right products.

Once absorbed into the skin, silk has been proven to boost collagen production which improves the appearance of the skin by making it looking younger and plumper.

Try our Argan Oil Hair Shampoo or Neroli & Cassis Hand Cream (coming soon!) with silk powder.

Or try our DIY Natural Foundation that uses silk powder. P1050601

8 tips for a better looking skin

1. Wash your  face twice daily

Chemical based cleansers such as those that use SLS and other harsh cleansers will leave your skin dry and looking dull.

  • Avoid harsh cleansers
  • Can’t understand the ingredients avoid it all together
  • Avoid alcohol based cleansers

Try our Bergamot Milk Cleanser for a gentle wash.

2. Drink more water

Our bodies are made up of 70% water and your skin is one of the first things that will show you are dehydrated. Your wrinkles are more noticeable and your skin is less able repair itself.

3. Moisturize wisely and daily

know your skin type ( dry, mixed, sensitive, oily)

It seems simple but by knowing your skin type will enable you to select a facial cream that is fit for your skin. Most companies like us, at Waterroots, design their products to respond to the needs of customers. We select active ingredients to moisturize and treat different skin types. Some creams are very moisturizing (for dry skin) others are very light (for oily skin).

4. cleanse before bed

Remove make up before bed! This is very important because the skin regenerates itself during sleep and it needs to be free from pore blocking make up to do a proper job.

5. Use a booster before bed

The word “booster” says it all. They are packed with active ingredients to assist your skin regenerate without interruption during the night. Try our Australian Botanica Night Booster serum (only at the market)!

A good facial will draw out impurities beneath the top layer of the epidermis leaving your skin clean and looking great. Want to know about masking click clay mask. Here’s a link to a DIY anti acne mask. Try our Honey Clay Mask.

8. Protect your assets

I am always surprised when people hesitate to spend $30 on organic skin products but won’t hesitate to spend $80 on a skirt for example. I think the most convincing facts about your skin is right in front of us. You only got one right? And guess what? You are stuck with it for the rest of your LIFE! So start by protecting it from the sun. Sun exposure is linked to brown spots, wrinkles and leathery skin. Protect your skin daily with a daily face cream that has sun protection. Try our Beeswax Face Cream with Zinc.
